2 why does advent calendar chocolate taste different?

If there is one thing that makes dark, cold and miserable December mornings more bearable, it is chocolate. Specifically: it takes five minutes to get a small piece of chocolate out of the plastic mould of an Advent calendar. In some ways, Advent calendar chocolate is a little different. Technically, you can break a Hershey bar every day, but the ritual of finding the right door, carefully opening it and savouring your prize makes Advent calendar chocolate special.

But is it really any different from regular chocolate? It depends on the calendar. If you buy a branded calendar from a chocolate manufacturer such as Cadbury's or Lindt, you can expect the chocolate to taste very similar to the confectioner's regular confectionery, even if the size and shape of the sweets are different.

Advent calendar chocolates are usually thin, often square, with rounded corners and embossed shapes on the surface. This means that, when placed on the tongue, they will melt very quickly, and the relatively large surface area means that your taste buds will get a fairly strong hit of chocolate. Although you would normally rush to take another bite or eat another candy, with Advent Calendar chocolate you know you can only eat one piece a day, so most people take more time to savour it.

Basically, it tastes different because you pay more attention to it.

However, if you have a more generic schedule, you might get a chocolate that you don't eat very often.

Cheap chocolate is usually not "real" chocolate: it's something called compound chocolate, which means it's not made with cocoa butter, but with cheaper fats. It is probably made with palm kernel oil or coconut oil. This gives it a different taste than real chocolate and a slightly different texture, which makes it seem a bit waxy or a bit oily. In fact, compound chocolate is easier to work with and mould and is less expensive, making it ideal for advent calendars.

So, yes, the chocolate in Advent calendars may taste completely different from the chocolate you plan to serve at your Christmas party. Whether you like it or not depends on your personal taste, coupled with just the right amount of nostalgia. If you have fond memories of your idyllic childhood eating Advent Calendar chocolates before Christmas, it may taste like pure pleasure.

3 Create your own super cheap chocolate advent calendar

Step 1: To make this cheap calendar, I opened it at both ends and carefully separated the mould from the cardboard calendar (it was glued, but easy to separate).

Step 2: Next, I removed the milk chocolate and cleaned the mould well to remove any remaining chocolate.

Step 3: Next, I melted some plain dark chocolate and plain white chocolate and filled the moulds with teaspoons. I then tapped the worktop to place the chocolate in the moulds. I use dairy-free, soy-free and nut-free homemade chocolate, which makes this calendar more affordable!

Step 4: I put the moulds in the fridge and the chocolate took only 20 minutes to harden completely.

Step 5: I opened the chocolates to remove them from the moulds, but did not unmould them, and put them back into the advent calendar. Finally, I closed the ends with transparent tape.

4 Other chocolate boxes for the Advent Calendar

Many shops, even grocery shops, have inexpensive advent calendars from which you can remove the chocolate moulds. The great thing about this is that you can reuse the moulds to make more festive chocolates in the future.

But if you're worried about being able to remove all the leftover chocolate (and allergens), you can buy new Christmas chocolate moulds. If you don't have time to order them online, you can usually find these moulds at shops like Walmart, Hobby Lobby or Michael's.

Of course, if you buy your own moulds, or reuse the chocolate Advent Calendar moulds, you will need a calendar to put these chocolates in.Two of my favourite cheap refillable advent calendars are this Deluxe Double Door Advent Calendar Box and the Premium Chocolate Advent Calendar Box with Dividers.

If you're short on time or want to do it all yourself, here are some really cute DIY options to bring out your crafty side. You can also use these mini paper bag advent calendars or recycled paper bag advent calendars (decorated to your liking!) which make it all so easy.

5 Trends in sustainable chocolate packaging

As consumers seek attractive and environmentally friendly Christmas calendar chocolate box, packaging developers are challenged to find sustainable, real, region-specific solutions that stand out on the shelf. Due to differences in local regulations, consumption habits, recycling capabilities and products, a one-size-fits-all approach will not solve the problem.

1. Take into account the legal requirements of each country.

In addition to conveying a specific look and feel, the packaging of chocolate products must also meet specific legal requirements, which may vary from region to region or country to country. Proper labelling of ingredients, allergen warnings, nutritional information and certifications are important components to ensure consumer safety and regulatory compliance.

Depending on the country or region, manufacturers may even have to provide additional information, such as disposal instructions. Packaging designers should always be aware of all legal requirements in order to create product labels that comply with them.

2. Sustainable packaging must take into account local regulations, consumption habits and local recyclability.

However, it is positive that new sustainable packaging materials for chocolate products are becoming more common, such as biodegradable plastics made from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugar cane, paper wrappers for chocolate balls often coated with a thin layer of plastic to provide a barrier against moisture and oxygen, and foil made from paper coated with a thin layer of aluminium foil.

Innovative chocolate box packaging technologies, such as barrier films, seals and appropriate storage conditions, can also significantly extend the shelf life of chocolate products. A longer shelf life gives consumers more convenience and confidence when shopping.

3. Why is sustainable packaging important?

Sustainable packaging is becoming increasingly popular and valued in the snacking and confectionery sector as consumers become more environmentally conscious. Environmentally friendly snack packaging, such as compostable, reusable, recyclable and biodegradable, is becoming more accessible and affordable. Sustainable nut snack packaging is good for the environment as it helps companies reduce their carbon footprint, save money and attract and retain environmentally conscious customers.

4. What sustainable packaging options are there?

One of the most popular sustainable packaging options for chocolate gourmet desserts in recent years is compostable packaging. Compostable materials are derived from plant-based materials such as corn starch, sugar cane and bamboo fibre. These materials are biodegradable and break down into organic matter if handled properly. Other sustainable chocolate packaging options include paper packaging, biodegradable plastics and plant-based materials. Companies wishing to switch to sustainable packaging options must consider environmental impact, cost and compatibility with their products.
